Ottawa Garbage Collection iCalendar Project

The City of Ottawa publishes their annual Garbage Collection Calendar in PDF format, which is great for printing, but not very useful for using electronically. This project aims at providing a more open version of the calendar.

The iCalendar format is a standard used by many applications to transfer calendar data, most commonly meeting and event invitations.

iCalendar Links

The city’s garbage collection is divided into four zones: A, B, C and D.   Use their search tool to determine which zone, and which pick-up day applies to your address.

Raw Data

In the spirit of open data, I am sharing the source code I used to create the iCal files.  I hope it may be of use to other municipalities.

Awesome work. I asked the city for this data and they told me it would be $17,000 and I would have to sign a licensing agreement…for public garbage data! How long did it take you to data enter?
    thanks again.

It took me about 2 hours to enter the data for the 4 “zones” in the city. Now that the data is in an open format, it can be used for any number of applications.

I can’t believe the city wanted to charge you $17K for this dataset. I would have thought it could have been retrieved through a MFIPPA request.
